Awarded a Michelin star and defined by precision at every level, The Millèn in Rotterdam is a restaurant where every detail contributes to a carefully constructed experience — from the composition of each plate to the atmosphere that frames the dining room. Positioned above the city, the interior offers a sense of openness while maintaining an intimate focus on the table, creating a calm distance from the movement of the urban landscape below.
Within this setting, Brand van Egmond was commissioned to develop lighting objects that could support the rhythm of the space without overwhelming it. The brief required a sculptural presence that would remain understated in character, yet clearly contribute to the spatial identity of the restaurant.
The resulting BUBBLES FLOW installation is composed of hand-blown glass elements suspended in a fluid, organic arrangement. The spheres vary subtly in scale and spacing, creating a composition that feels continuous rather than fixed. Rather than forming a rigid structure, the installation follows the natural flow of the interior, aligning with sightlines, circulation, and the pacing of the dining experience.
Each glass element captures and disperses light in different ways, producing a soft, layered glow that shifts throughout the evening. The effect is one of gentle movement — a visual rhythm that complements the restaurant’s refined architecture and understated material palette.
Designed by William Brand and handcrafted in the Brand van Egmond atelier, the installation reflects a hospitality approach rooted in restraint, calibration, and atmosphere. In spaces such as The Millèn, light is not an accent but a structural component of experience — shaping how guests perceive time, space, and presence within the room.
