On Lidingö, at the edge of Stockholm’s archipelago, a former boathouse has been transformed into a contemporary residence that remains closely tied to the waterline. The elongated wooden volume, clad in larch and opened through wide glass surfaces, reads as a horizontal vessel anchored to the shoreline. Its composition extends across three levels, including a lower floor with a pool, while the main living level is conceived as a continuous space for cooking, dining, and gathering. A roof terrace, designed for arrival by helicopter, completes the building’s layered relationship with land, water, and air.
Developed with Ulf Nelson Arkitekter and shaped together with GECO, the interiors follow a calm, almost hotel-like logic — restrained tones, tactile materials, and a precise, considered selection of furniture, including Minotti. Within this quiet framework, light becomes one of the few deliberate accents, defining the atmosphere as daylight recedes.
For the main dining area, Brand van Egmond’s HOLLYWOOD GLASS chandelier was selected as a central feature. Suspended above the table, the piece introduces a dense yet transparent structure of hand-formed glass elements, arranged in layered clusters that capture and break light across their surfaces. During the day, the chandelier responds to the shifting reflections of the surrounding water and glass façade; in the evening, it gathers warmth from within, taking on a more intimate and concentrated glow.
The material presence of the piece is deliberately expressive, yet controlled in scale. It introduces complexity without disrupting the clarity of the architecture, acting instead as a point of focus within an otherwise restrained interior. The interplay between glass, reflection, and movement creates a direct connection back to the site itself, where natural light, water, and weather remain in constant flux.
In this residence, light is not applied as an accent. It becomes part of the spatial structure — a measured counterpoint to stillness, framing daily life within a changing environment.
