Some spaces carry centuries within their walls. This historic Maison de Maître in France has been carefully restored into a refined mountain chalet, where original timber structures are preserved, local craftsmanship is respected, and contemporary interventions are introduced with restraint and precision. The result is an interior where past and present coexist without hierarchy.
In close collaboration with Shep & Kyles Design, Brand van Egmond developed a lighting approach that responds directly to the rhythm and materiality of the architecture. Rather than introducing contrast, the lighting was conceived as an extension of the interior language — calibrated in scale, tone, and placement to support the spatial composition.
A tailor-made ERSA chandelier anchors the main salon. Composed of flowing glass elements arranged in a suspended, cascading formation, the piece introduces a sense of lightness within the solid framework of timber and stone. Its structure is visually open, allowing light to pass through and around the glass, creating shifting reflections that respond to both daylight and firelight. The sculpture occupies the space with clarity, without disrupting its architectural weight.
Throughout the chalet, ORPHEUS elements continue this dialogue in a more dispersed manner. Each piece is positioned to respond to specific moments within the interior — circulation points, seating areas, and architectural thresholds — reinforcing continuity across the different spaces.
Designed by William Brand and handcrafted in the Brand van Egmond atelier, the installation reflects an approach grounded in collaboration and architectural sensitivity. In this project, lighting functions as a connecting layer: integrating structure, atmosphere, and material into a cohesive whole.
